A Message from Candice Christmas…
The bad news… the Greens didn’t win the election in Kingston & The Islands. There is a Liberal minority government as predicted. Please don’t unsubscribe from our mail list because our campaign team has pledged to stay active as we enter a period of uncertainty in a minority government. That means being ready for a snap election in Spring of 2020. It also means turning up the heat on the Liberals, including our local MP, regarding the climate crisis, the local housing crisis, the mental health and addictions crisis, the implementation of 5G technology, the Phoenix Pay System debacle… there is so much work to be done. The Greens will continue to be a strong voice.
There is reason to celebrate! Under a first past the post system, Greens received over 1.1 million votes, with 49 campaigns getting 10% or more, and 162 ridings – including Kingston & The Islands (6,059) – doubling their votes from 2015! That is really a testament to the incredible work of our supporters and volunteers! There are so many of you I can’t list you all, but my heart is full of gratitude and pride. To my campaign team, I cannot adequately put into words how much your efforts, and friendship, means to me. This was my first time as a political candidate. I am incredibly humbled how so many people can extend so much energy and support to a campaign, to the party and platform which is so amazing and full of hope, and to me as your candidate. Each of your notes of encouragement, or stopping me on the street to voice your support, meant so much to me. You stayed positive and focused in the middle of an extremely negative and divisive election. Greens stood out and walked the walk.
While three Green seats are good, we know we are even closer to something bigger. We have assets stowed away and at the ready. We plan on working through our local Green Party EDA to continue building a war chest (so we are ready if the writ drops), keeping members engaged through seasonal meetings, and town halls on issues of local significance. Please put the GPC EDA website (https://kingstonislandsgpc.ca/) in your favourites.
Once again, thank you for your support and encouragement. Please, let’s continue to fight for ecologic and social justice! We can’t do it without you.
